Inspiration can come in a flash, but ideation – the process of taking an idea from conception to implementation – is something that can take time, research and experience.

What is ideation?

Ideation, or idea generation, is the process of generating and developing new ideas through a range of different methods including brainstorming. We then evaluate and refine the ideas to determine which ones are the best for you.

The ideation process can focus around solving a specific problem, making improvements to an existing idea, or taking partially formed ideas and working them up into something powerful.

Our approach

Sometimes it is hard to see the wood for the trees and that is where drawing upon the skills of an external agency can help. Here at 4CM, all of our client campaigns will involve some form of ideation. This usually takes place within the team as part of your marketing plan or project but we can also run specific ideation workshops that involve a wider team from within our clients’ businesses.

The ideation process includes:

  • Identifying the challenge that needs to be solved.
  • Research – to gather insight relating to the issue or opportunity.
  • Remit – we devise the remit for ideation and prepare ‘how might you’ questions.
  • Brainstorm – to generate a wide range of free-flow ideas.
  • Evaluation – to analyse the feasibility and likely impact of ideas against known variables, such as your audience profiles, where and how they like to receive information and your desired outcome.
  • Refinement – to further develop the most promising and feasible ideas.
  • Testing – if required for the project we will test shortlisted ideas with your internal teams and, if required, a sample of your audience.
  • Action plan – to progress the best idea(s).

Managing the ideation process requires soft skills such as disrupting without causing offence, making connections between ideas and recognising how ideas can be scaled up or down as needed. At 4CM, we are experienced at helping businesses to see new opportunities and change direction where needed.
